Mrs. W. H. Elder,, formerly Mies Grotchcn Harper, graduate of Bro okneal
High School, was taken to the Virginia Baptist Hospital I st Thursday
night suffering from an attack of appendicitis.
Dr. Bradford Yates, a former classmate of Mrs. Elder, who has a.
large practice in New York, flew down in his private plane to perform
the operation. His assistant was Miss Justine Holt, e.lso a member of the
class of 1940. The- operation was very successful.
Friday afternoon Mrs. Elder was visited by Miss Rachel Pillow, who
is caring, for Willie Jr., and little Gretchen during her neighbors’ ill¬
ness. Miss Pillow, as you may know, is an old maid, but still hopeful.
Mrs. L. H. Foster was visited last week-end by her son L. H. J'r.,
who is still strug0ling through an engineering course at Virginia Tech.
Mies Ann Guthrie gave up her brilliant professional c; reer as a

is still teaching school at Ock Heights, received a. letter from miss

Miss Martha Monroe, who has a job as companion to the wealthy Mrs.
Alfred Vanderbilt, plans to attend the baseball game of July 10, 1SS0.

Mr. Grayson Barks da le was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers as a sec¬
ond baseman, Grayson's first game of the season will be played in the
Yankee Stadium on July 10.

Our senior class wt s started by three of its present members, Vir¬
ginia Lae Rudder, L. H. Foster, Jr., and Bradford Yat.es . The first grade
was taught by Miss Mary Herndon.
In tne second grade four new members joined the class; namely, Mary
*iilam I* oster, Estelle Holland, Grayson Barksdale, and Rachel Pillow. Miss
Herndon was also our second grade teacher.
Three more members joined us in the third gride; Justine Holt, Hugh
lillov, and Parham Ma.rtin. Katherine Roark a.nd Martha Monroe joine-d us
in the fourth grade. We made considerable progress under the capable

Tiio Senior Play, ’’When Man Plays Maiden", directed by kiss Dorothy

The Baccalaureate Semen was delivered by Rev. R. S. Booker, pa.ster
of Bro^kneal Baptist Church on June 2.
On Class Night, the: Presidents address was given by Martha ^onroe,
history of the Class by Virginia Mae Rudcer, Last Will and Testament by

The ^ purpose of the S. C. A, is to encourage and s give an
opportunity for teachers and students cooperation In school
activities. In order to better fulfill these objectives our
Brookmeal S. C. A. has been organized into two groups--Hieh
School and Grade S. C. A.
Some of the outstanding committees are program, building
and grounds, health and safety, church and welfare, and ath¬
letic.
The building and grounds committee especially assisted
by members of the third and fourth grades, have attempted
to keep halls and grounds clean, free of paper. The building
and grounds committee has also taken an interest in planting
and fertilizing plants and shrubbery to beautify the grounds.
Safety partols have been organized.
Church and Welfare committee has encouraged church at-
tendanceand has cooperated with the local churches in distri-
u 'ing literature to those not attending any church,
_ The S. C. A. has cooperated with the Parent-Teachers as¬
sociation m its programs for raising funds.

means provided necessary play ground equipment end other
couipiay^t, including baseball suits for the boys, girls bjsket
suite and boys shirts. It has made it possible for the
ocnool to award letters to outstanding athletes. It has also
supplied a medicine cabinet with much needed supplies of ban¬
dages and other simple mddicines.
